Steel weight calculator
This steel weight calculator gives the theoretical weight of plate, round pipe, square hollow sections and H-beam, WF and I-beam profiles from their size, length and quantity. You get kg per metre, kg per piece and the total in kg or tonnes, including zinc coating weight for galvanized steel, using a density of 7,850 kg/m³.
Result
- Weight per metre
- 21.3kg/m
- Per piece
- 255.6kg
- Steel total
- 2,556kg
- Total 10 pcs
- 2,556 kg≈ 2.56 ton
kg = JIS G3192 nominal weight (kg/m) × length (m)
Theoretical values; actual weight follows the mill certificate.
How to use
Steps
- 1
Choose the shape (plate, pipe, hollow or H/WF/I-beam) and a carbon or galvanized finish.
- 2
Enter dimensions in millimetres, length per piece in metres and the number of pieces or sheets.
- 3
For galvanized steel, enter the zinc coating mass (g/m²) from the specification or certificate.
- 4
Read the weight per piece and total, then press “Request a quote for this result” to add it to your quote list.

Steel weight formulas and table
Carbon steel density is about 7,850 kg/m³. All formulas below use millimetres unless stated otherwise.
- Plate: kg = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85
- Round pipe: kg/m = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466
- Square hollow: kg/m ≈ (4 × B − 4 × t) × t × 0.00785 — corner radius ignored, so the result is an estimate
- H-beam / WF / I-beam: kg = nominal table weight (kg/m) × length (m)
- Zinc coating: kg = g/m² × surface area (m²) ÷ 1,000. For sheet/plate, g/m² is the total of both sides (e.g. Z275); for pipe, hollow and sections, g/m² is per coated surface (hot-dip).
Theoretical values; actual weight follows the mill certificate. Thickness tolerance, corner radii and cut length make the weighed mass differ by a few percent.

Frequently asked questions
Can’t find the answer? Contact our team — we reply the same business day.
What is the steel plate weight formula?
Plate weight (kg) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. A 2.4 × 1.2 m plate, 6 mm thick, weighs about 135.6 kg.
How do I calculate steel pipe weight per metre?
Pipe weight (kg/m) = (outside diameter − wall) × wall × 0.02466, in mm. A 60.3 mm OD pipe with a 3.9 mm wall weighs about 5.4 kg/m.
Why is the hollow-section result an estimate?
The square hollow formula ignores the corner radius. Actual weight is usually slightly lower, so use the result for estimates, not for acceptance.
Where do the H-beam and I-beam weights come from?
From nominal weights in the JIS G3192 table for common sizes. Mills can differ slightly because of radii and tolerances, so use the mill certificate for official figures.
How much does galvanizing add?
Zinc weight = coating mass (g/m²) × coated surface area. For hot-dip galvanized sections this is typically a few percent of the steel weight.
